Mats can be very difficult to remove and may require shaving. Removing a heavily matted coat carries risks: nicks, cuts or abrasions, because warts, moles or skin folds can be trapped in the mats.
Mats left in a coat only grow tighter. They can strangle the skin or eventually tear it open. Heavy matting also traps moisture and urine near the skin, which lets mold, fungus or bacteria grow and cause skin irritation that was already there before the groom. Torn skin can also attract maggots.
After mat removal, pets may be itchy or have red skin, may irritate or scratch themselves, and the hair may fail to grow back. Shaved pets burn easily in the sun: apply sunscreen daily or keep them out of the sun until the hair grows enough to protect the skin. Some pets also show brief behavior changes.
We do not want to cause a serious incident or add stress to your pet. There is an extra charge for even mild de-matting. The charge depends on the dog’s size, the degree of matting, your pet’s cooperation and the extra time needed to remove the mats safely.
